Self Care + Amicalola Falls
Finding Serenity in The Beauty of Amicalola
One of the greatest sources of natural self-care can be found free and plentiful in the great outdoors. There are few places where one can receive more nourishment for the soul than in nature.
Nature provides peace in abundance! Recently, I was able to tap into that incredible peace at Amicalola State Park – a hidden gem tucked into the Georgia mountains.
Finding Peace at Amicalola State Park

Nestled in the majestic Georgia mountains, Amicalola is home to spectacular waterfalls, beautiful trails, and incredible wildlife. With over 800 acres of jaw-dropping serenity, the trails are perfect for an afternoon stroll or a day hike. A favorite of many, the Amicalola Falls are surrounded by lush greenery and are simply breathtaking!
Arriving at Amicalola, my mind and soul were much like the Cherokee meaning of the park itself – “tumbling waters.” Upon arrival in Georgia, I learned of the passing of four of my clients. Not unlikely news as a Social Worker but it still saddens me everytime there is a loss. Within a few hours in this beautiful location, I was able to find a sense of peace and tranquility that I am intentional about finding to create balance in my work and professional life.
Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge is an 829-acre Georgia state park located in Dawsonville, Georgia between Ellijay and Dahlonega. Amicalola Falls, a 729-foot waterfall that is the highest in Georgia, is located within the park. The trail offers several winding paths, and lengths vary between 2.5 to 3 miles – the perfect length for a day hike.
Day passes for the park are only $5 – making Amicalola one of the most affordable investments you can make in yourself. After a day outside, you can even take in a mountain-top lodge that offers amazing amenities such as rustic overlooks and the Maple Restaurant (with amazing brunch options!)
Climbing Amicalola Falls

The highlight of my trip was conquering Amicalola Falls. The mountain is 829 feet tall, with a massive 729 foot cascading waterfall at its summit. Not for the faint of heart, Amicalola’s trail will take you up more than 600 steps that wind up to the peak.
The climb to the top of the falls was a pivotal moment. When I reached the top, I felt a sudden sense of accomplishment and self-worth, knowing that, no matter how difficult life can be, I am capable of much more than I give myself credit for.

After spending the day hiking along cascading waterfalls, watching for wildlife, and basking in the beauty of nature, I was reminded that self-care is as natural as it comes. In fact, at some point or another, we all need to take a step back from our everyday lives to enjoy the beautiful world around us.
In finding Amicalola, I found a place of natural self-care. The most effective forms of self-care don’t cost. Being at one with nature is one intervention that’s beneficial for us all.
The lesson in all of it is simple: You don’t have to go far to find self-care. You just need to open your eyes and let it in!
